MotionBased Agent Help

Getting Started

System Requirements
Currently, the MotionBased Agent is available for PCs running Windows 98/ME/2000/XP. We plan to support the Mac operating system in late 2005.

Version 2.3.0.1 is available for download. Check out what's new.

Basic Steps
Follow these steps, and you'll be up and running in no time:
  1. Connect supported GPS device to your computer using the appropriate USB or Serial cable.
  2. Make sure the GPS device is either on and/or charging in its docking station (Forerunner and Foretrex series).
  3. Open MotionBased Agent.
  4. Enter MotionBased Username (first time only).
  5. Click on "Synchronize Activities". It usually takes less than one minute to extract the data from a GPS device.
  6. If you have an Internet connection, the Agent will send your activitiy information directly to your Inbox at MotionBased.
  7. If you don't have an Internet connection, the Agent will store your activity information until you have an Internet connection. When you have an Internet connection, click on "Synchronize Activities".
  8. If the Agent communicates with MotionBased there will be messages specific to your synchronization that appear on the right side of the Agent explaining successes, failures, and the status of your Inbox.
  9. Go to your Inbox to review, categorize, and personalize your newly uploaded activities.

Core Features

Synchronize Activities
This is the primary function of the Agent -- getting data from your GPS device to MotionBased. After you power on the GPS device and connect it to your computer with the PC cable, click on "Synchronize Activities" to send your data to MotionBased. The upload takes less than 1 minute for most activities.

If you have an Internet connection, the Agent will send your activitiy information directly to your Inbox at MotionBased. If you don't have an Internet connection, the Agent will store your activity information until you have an Internet connection. When you have an Internet connection, click on "Synchronize Activities".

Synchronize Activities
This only appears on the Agent when you have pending activities stored on the PC as result of not having an Internet connection the last time you retreived activities. You may also have pending activities if an error occured the last time you tried to use the Agent.

Configure Agent
This is where you can review and modify your Agent settings:

MotionBased Username
You must assign the same username you created on the MotionBased website to your Agent. This is how we associate the activities on your GPS device to your Inbox. If you ever change your username, you must make this change on the Agent.

Power off device
Let the Agent automatically turn off your GPS device after the upload is complete. Not recommended for the Forerunner 301.

Show taskbar icon
Faster launch of the application. Check this box and a MB icon will appear near the clock on your Windows taskbar.

Send entire History
To speed up the retrieval process the Agent will not try to send an activity that has already been sent to MotionBased. MotionBased determines if your newly uploaded activity exists in the system by date/time stamp. If it finds a match, your new activity will be ignored and NOT sent to your Inbox. Check this box if you want to send all activity information regardless of duplicates.

Multiple devices attached
When retrieving activities the Agent will continue to search your machine for more devices after one is already found if this box is checked.

Agent Version
The version number of the agent is found near the Exit button on the configure page.

View Activities
This is a quick way to access your personal Digest at the MotionBased website.

Agent Messages
When you open the Agent it will communicate with MotionBased to see if there are any new messages that may be important. These messages may be general announcements and/or personalized for your specific review. This is the best way for us to communicate with you about new features and updates that will affect your MotionBased experience. You may always view and syndicate these MotionBased Agent Messages online.

Forerunner Issues

Is the upload time getting longer each time you use the MB Agent?
Well... that's because we have to upload all of the activity stored in the history log on the device. If we find a match in your Inbox or Digest, we then ignore that activity. Unfortunately, this process means that large data files must be transferred from the device to the Agent -- most of which is unnecessary. Here's a quick fix...

"Delete History" from your Forerunner 201/301 on a periodic basis. This will clean out the memory on your device to make for faster uploads to MotionBased. Please refer to your manual on how to "Delete History".

Note: Don't "Delete History" until you've successfully uploaded to MotionBased.

Troubleshooting

What should I do if the MotionBased Agent can't detect my GPS device?
  1. Check our supported GPS list
  2. Check our Agent requirements
  3. Ensure you don't have activities from an unsupported country stored on your GPS device
  4. Ensure the Serial or USB cable fits snug in the port
  5. Check to see if your Serial or USB port works with other applications
  6. If you're device uses a USB cable, make sure you installed the USB drivers
  7. Ensure you have the latest GPS firmware on your device
  8. USB/Serial converters are known to have problems. Make sure you are able to communicate with another program like the Garmin Forerunner Logbook or G7ToWIn.
  9. Send an email to support@motionbased.com. Please include the brand/model of the USB/Serial converter (if applicable), the version of your Agent and gps device.

I upgraded to the latest Agent, but the new version does not seem to be installed?
The old Agent version is resident in the memory of your computer even though the new version is successfully installed.
Agent Taskbar
  1. Look for the Agent icon in the taskbar.
  2. Right-click on the Agent icon and choose Exit.
  3. Open the Agent through the Start -> Programs -> MotionBased menu.
  4. Verify your Agent version is 2.3.0.1.
