Term Units Description
Activity   A MotionBased event composed of a 3-dimensional route with a start time and finish time. MotionBased extracts track information from a GPS and converts them into unique Activities. See related terms: Route
Adobe SVG Viewer   An application that must be installed in order to view interactive maps and charts. Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) is a new graphics file format and Web development language we have used to build the Map Player section of MotionBased. Our Map Player is data driven, interactive, and personalized. See related terms: Map Player
Agent   This client-software application acts as the conduit from your GPS device to the MotionBased website. It will also serve as the gateway to other performance hardware devices.
Altitude feet Height above mean sea level.
Analyzer   Segment your Activity based on Distance with this interactive tool. View detailed metrics on each segment.
Ascent   Any segment of your Route whose grade is above +2%. See related terms: Segment, Grade, Route

Ascent Grade percent A grade defined by MotionBased that is above +2%. See related terms: Grade
Ascent Rate (Avg.) feet/minute The weighted average of the rate of altitude gain over time. See related terms: Ascent
Ascent Rate (Max.) feet/minute The maximum vertical speed achieved during any ascent. See related terms: Ascent
Ceiling Height feet Altitude of cloud cover measured on day of activity by nearest weather station. See related terms: Weather Station
Clear GPS History   The action of removing all GPS History from your GPS device. It is required to prevent long uploads to the Agent and duplicate activities in your Digest. See related terms: GPS History, Agent, Digest
Cloud Cover percent Coverage of the sky by clouds measured on day of activity by nearest weather station. See related terms: Weather Station
Colorizer   A tool in the Map Player used to change the color of the route based on speed or elevation. See related terms: Map Player, Route
Cut   In the Map Player, this action will splice your Activity into two segments using the current location of the participant. This action will save your current activity and create new activities for submission in the Inbox. A scissors icon will mark the point along the route where your cut will occur. Dashboard   Static analysis of your Activity using charts, tables, and graphs. The Dashboard is broken out into several sections: Summary, Time, Distance, Speed, Elevation, Workout, and Weather.
Descending Segment   Any segment with a grade of less than -2%. See related terms: Segment, Grade
Descent   Any segment of your Route whose grade is below -2%. See related terms: Segment, Grade, Route
Descent Grade percent A grade defined by MotionBased that is below -2%. See related terms: Grade
Descent Grade (Avg.) percent The weighted average of all descents of your current activity. See related terms: Descent
Descent Rate (Avg.) feet/minute The weighted average of vertical speed for all descents of your current activity. See related terms: Descent, Vertical Speed
Descent Rate (Max.) feet/minute The maximum vertical speed achieved during any descent segment. See related terms: Descent, Vertical Speed
Descent Speed (Avg.) miles/hour Average weighted velocity while traveling on descents. See related terms: Descent.

Digest   An online archive of your activities that you may browse and search with simple and advanced filters.
Distance miles Distance traveled from start to finish.
Distance Marker   On the Map Player, the icon that represents the distance from the start, represented by an arrow. See related terms: Map Player, Split
Dot   In the Map Player, the icon that refers to the participant. See related terms: Participant, Map Player
Edit Activity   Edit activity to change name, activity type, event type, comments and to cut an activity into multiple activities. A copy of this activity is created and this activity will not be modified directly.
Edit GPS   In the Map Player, this function allows you to cut your Route at one point, creating two new routes and saving your old one. Use to slice off sections of a route for further analysis. See related terms: Map Player, Route, Cut
Elevation (Max.) feet Highest elevation reached during the activity.
Elevation (Min.) feet Lowest elevation reached during the activity.
Elevation Change feet The sum of Elevation gained and lost during an activity.
Elevation Gain feet Total gain of elevation from start to finish.
Elevation Loss feet Total loss of elevation from start to finish.
Elevation Profile   A graph of your Route which plots elevation and distance. See related terms: Route
Finish   The position, in latitude and longitude, where the activity ended.
Finish Elevation feet Height above sea level at finish of activity.
Finish Time time zone The time recorded at the finish of the activity, using the Time Zone in which the start was located.
Flat Distance miles Total of distance traveled on flat grade. See related terms: Segment, Grade
Flat Grade   A grade defined by MotionBased that is between -2% and +2%. See related terms: Flat Segment, Grade
Flyaway   When you are viewing your Activity you might see that you achieved an extreme speed or position, such as a speed of 200miles/hour. This is known as a flyaway. It occurs when you lose your GPS Signal. MotionBased will allow you to delete such occurrences using the Drop feature in the Map Player. See related terms: Map Player, Drop
GPS   Global Positioning System (GPS) is the core technology being used for MotionBased applications and services. GPS satellites, 24 in all, orbit at 11,000 nautical miles above the Earth. They are continuously monitored by ground stations located worldwide. The satellites transmit signals that can be detected by anyone with a GPS receiver. Using the receiver, you can determine your location with great precision.
GPS History   On your GPS device, the entire log of track points automatically stored when you are moving. It is the electronic equivalent of laying down a "breadcrumb trail" to mark your path. See related terms: Track Log, GPS Log

GPS Signal Loss (Distance) miles The total accrued distance in which your GPS device lost signal reception. Also given as a percent of Distance
GPS Signal Loss (Time) d:h:m:s The total accrued time in which your GPS device lost signal reception. Also given as a percent of Total Time.
GPS Signal Outages integer The total number of times your GPS lost signal reception.
Grade percent A measure of the steepness of a slope. See related terms: Descent Grade, Ascent Grade, Flat Grade.
Inbox   Temporary zone for reviewing and categorizing all incoming data sent from the Agent: currently tracks, waypoints. See related terms: Agent, Track, Waypoint
Interactive Window   In the Map Player, the Elevation Profile can be resized and/or dragged using your mouse. See related terms: Map Player
Latitude   An angular distance in degrees north or south of the equator (latitude 0°). See related terms: Longitude
Layers   In the Map Player, individual elements that may be displayed or hidden in the Map Window.
Longitude   An angular distance in degrees east or west of the prime meridian at 0°. See related terms: Latitude
Map Background   In the Map Player, each image that can be viewed behind the route in the Map Window. It can be a street map, a satellite photo, a 3-D elevation map, or a topographic map. See related terms: Map Player, Map Window, Route

Moving Time d:h:m:s Total amount of time in motion.
My Activities   Overview of your activities, containing news, general stats and reports.
Net Elevation Change feet Net difference between elevation gain and elevation loss.
Number of Stops (Total) integer Number of times where a Stop occurred. See related terms: Stop
Overall Grade (Avg.) percent Weighted average of grade for all segments of route. See related terms: Grade, Segment, Route.
Overall Grade (Max.) percent Maximum value of grade that occurred during activity. See related terms: Grade
Overall Speed miles/hour Average velocity for entire activity.
Overall Time d:h:m:s Duration of activity from start to finish. See related terms: Activity
Pace minute/mile The amount of time to travel a predefined distance.
Panning   A function in the Map Player to move the Route and Map Background together. Hold "Alt" key and click-and-drag mouse to pan image. See related terms: Map Player, Route, Map Background
Participant   The user who recorded the activity, referenced by a "Dot" on the Map Player. See related terms: Map Player, Dot
Player Control   In the Map Player, an interface which allows you to simulate the activity. See related terms: Map Player
Precipitation Amount inches Measurement of rainfall on the day of the activity as recorded by the nearest weather station. See related terms: Weather Station
Precipitation Type   Type of precipitation on the day of the activity measured at the weather station. See related terms: Weather Station.
Predominant Weather Type   Type of weather recorded on the day of the activity by the nearest weather station. See related terms: Weather Station
Predominant Wind Direction   Direction of wind recorded on the day of the activity by the nearest weather station. See related terms: Weather Station.
Relative Humidity percent Humidity recorded on the day of the activity by the nearest weather station. See related terms: Weather Station
Route   The series of segments from Start to Finish for an activity. See related terms: Segment
Saved Track   The action of condensing a track on your GPS device to save memory. The action is not good for analysis at MotionBased since all references to time are removed. See related terms: Track
Segment   The line between any two track points. See related terms: Track point
Split multiple Segment of route, or series of segments chosen for measurement by MotionBased tool or user. Splits can refer to distance, time, grade, elevation. See related terms: Segment, Route, Grade
Start   The point, in latitude and longitude, where the activity began. See related terms: Latitude, Longitude
Start Elevation feet Height above sea level at start of activity.
Start Time time zone The time recorded at the start of the activity, using the Time Zone the start was located in.
Stop   A point along the route in which participant was stationary for at least 15 seconds. See related terms: Route, Participant
Stopped Time d:h:m:s Total of the accrued time of each stop of your Activity. See related terms: Stop
Temperature fahrenheit degrees Ambient temperature recorded on the day of the activity by the nearest weather station. See related terms: Weather Station
Time Elapsed d:h:m:s The accrued time from the start to the current position of the participant on the route. See related terms: Route, Participant
Time of Day   The time of day at the moment in which the position on route was recorded. See related terms: Route
Total Elevation feet Gross change in elevation. The sum of the total elevation gain and the total elevation loss.
Total Time d:h:m:s Duration of activity from start to finish. See related terms: Activity
Track   A term used by some of Garmin GPS devices. It refers to a series of track points. See related term: Track point
Track Log   A log of track points automatically stored when you are moving. It is the electronic equivalent of laying down a "breadcrumb trail" to mark your path. See related terms: GPS History, GPS Log, Breadcrumb Trail
Track point   A point on a route. Two track points make a segment. MotionBased gets a log of track points from the GPS device to construct an activity. Track point Arrow   In the Map Player, the smallest arrow icon. It refers to one track point in your Activity. See related terms: Map Player, Track point
TrailNetwork   A network of activities posted by other MotionBased members. View metric and mapping data for each activity posted to the TrailNetwork. Search through this growing database with simple and advanced filters.
Upload   Import tracks and waypoints from files on your PC.
Vertical Speed feet/minute The rate of altitude gain/loss over time.
WAAS   Wide Area Augmentation System is an FAA-funded project designed to improve the overall accuracy and integrity of GPS signals.
Waypoint   Location or landmark worth remembering. Waypoints are recorded on your GPS device by the participant for future reference. MotionBased can import waypoints and display them in the Map Player. See related terms: Map Player
Weather Station   Station where weather measurements are made. MotionBased finds closest station to the start of the activity to get weather data. See related terms: Start
Weather Type   Type of weather recorded on day of activity by nearest weather station. See related terms: Weather Station.
Wind Gust miles/hour Wind gust recorded on day of activity by nearest weather station. See related terms: Weather Station
Wind Speed miles/hour Wind speed recorded on day of activity by nearest weather station. See related terms: Weather Station
Zoom in   In the Map Player, use this keyboard shortcut to zoom in. (1) Hold "Control" and left-click to zoom in at the mouse pointer location. (2) Hold the "control" key and click-and-drag to select a region to zoom into. See related terms: Map Player, Zoom out
